KARACHI, July 9: Police registered on Tuesday a case against several persons for planning to kill President Pervez Musharraf during his visit to the city in April.

Police registered an FIR (94/2002) at Airport police station against Mohammed Imran, Mohammed Hanif, Rangers Inspector Waseem Akhtar and others for plotting a criminal conspiracy and attempting to kill President Pervez Musharraf on his visit to the city on April 26. The FIR was, however, sealed.

Police said Imran, the chief of the Harkatul Mujahideen Al Alami, which was an obscure organization till recently, the chief of the militant wing of the Harkat, Hanif, and others parked a Suzuki pickup carrying explosives near Falak Naz Centre on Sharea Faisal. They planned to attack the president with the vehicle-bomb, but the remote-controlled device failed to work to detonate the explosives.

Police said Inspector Wasim of the rangers remained in touch with the alleged terrorists over a mobile phone providing them information about the movement of the president.

After the plan failed, Sharib, a member of the Harkat, took the pickup to a garage. The same vehicle was used in the bomb attack on the US consulate on June 14, which left six men and six women dead, police said.

Imran, Hanif and Inspector Waseem were in police custody. Imran and Hanif were produced before journalists on Monday, at the rangers headquarters in the city.

Imran and Hanif were also involved in the bomb blast at the US consulate and a number of other bomb explosions and firing at police, etc, police said.
