PESHAWAR, July 8: The Pakistan People’s Party has termed the constitutional package by the government a mockery with the spirit of democracy, which aimed at blocking the way of democracy in Pakistan.

Speaking to various delegations of party hailing from southern district here on Monday, a former PPP minister Qamar Abbas hoped that the new parliament would undo all the dictatorial changes in the Constitution after the October elections.

The present non- elected government had no right to bring any amendment in the Constitution, he added.

The constitutional package was a move towards the presidential form of government in the country, which was nothing else, but to abrogate the Constitution and to declare himself (Gen Musharraf) as monarch of the country, he said.

He said the ugly package was aimed at keeping PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto out of the politics, but the rulers must realise that Ms Bhutto would return to the country and lead a movement for the restoration of democracy.

Ms Bhutto, he said, could not be kept away from the masses and she would be the next prime minister of Pakistan. By introducing new ordinances, Gen Musharraf could stretch his tenure for some more months, but the new parliament would remove all amendments from the Constitution, he added.

The nomination of a prime minister, he said, was an exclusive right of the elected parliament. Imposition of any outsider as prime minister would not be tolerated by the people, he added.

He said the government would face with the similar situation as they had to in the so-called presidential referendum. The people would bring a historic victory in the elections for the PPP, he claimed.

The government-sponsored so-called National Alliance fell into pieces before it could make a take-off. The hand-picked splinter groups were facing the same situation, he added.
