KOHAT, May 21 Police claimed to have seized huge quantity of lethal arms and ammunition being smuggled from tribal areas to down country near Lachi town on Indus Highway on Thursday.

Police said that they also arrested a member of the inter-provincial gang of smugglers along with the vehicle.

The consignment was seized after safely passing through two major army checkposts and at least three permanent police checkpoints and one mobile team between Darra Adamkhel and Lachi.

Police said that DSP Mushtaq and his team were checking vehicles on Indus Highway near Lachi when a suspicious pickup bearing registration number J-9469 appeared from Darra Adamkhel side.

Policemen stopped the vehicle and recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition from its secret cavities. Mohammad Usman son of Nek Mohammad, resident of Bannu was also arrested red handed. The accused said that he was taking the consignment to Waziristan from arms manufacturing town of Darra Adamkhel.

The seizure included five light machineguns, four Kalashnikovs, one Kalakov, nine 12 bore shotguns, one spring rifle, twenty pistols, 38 magazines and 1,750 rounds of 30 bore pistols. The Lachi police registered a case against the accused and started investigations.
