15-foot wide breach in LBDC

Published July 7, 2002

OKARA, July 6: At least 15-foot wide breach on the Lower Bari Doab Canal’s 4-L distributary bank and near bridge on the Okara-Faisalabad Road played havoc with some areas on Friday night.

Dawn learnt on Saturday that some potable water-supply tubewells collapsed. The tehsil council staff and policemen plugged the breach after some hours.

It is learnt that the distributary’s four-kilometre portion, passing through the district, is in bad shape.

The eastern road bank towards city and western road towards the district courts’ complex, especially at the back of the residences of the SSP, district and sessions judge and DCO, are crowded areas. Besides rush of traffic, wagon and rickshaw drivers use canal water for washing their vehicles. Scores of cattle always set a sight of bathing.

However, the canal officials are allegedly indifferent to all these happenings.

Scores of residents on the eastern bank have demanded DCO Khalid Masood Chaudhry and district Nazim Syed Sajjad Haider to take stock of the situation without delay.
