KARACHI, July 1: The Anti Car-Lifting Cell of the Sindh Police has unearthed a racket involving provincial excise officials in the multiple registration of vehicles.

As many as 700 four-wheel vehicles and 4,000 two-wheel vehicles have been found with multiple registration during investigation, the ACLC sources said, adding that eleven cases have been registered against excise officials for this crime, while inquiry in six other cases is currently underway.

Multiple registration causes huge revenue losses to the government as well as to the original owners of all such vehicles, sources said. In some cases,

the single owner of many vehicles pays Motor Vehicle Tax once a year on one document while evading tax on other vehicles.

In other cases, excise officials, through forged documents, transfer the vehicles to another without any knowledge of the original owners, they disclosed.

This illegal practice not only creates problems for the original owners, but also abets criminals in committing crime as they escape from the law using forged documents and fake number plates.

The ACLC, during Jan to May this year, found 222 self-made number plates of which 85 were kept in cars and 14 at home.—PPI
