KARACHI, April 8 Two local universities made their exit while the hosts advanced to quarter-finals on the opening day of the Inter-university basketball championship (final round) at the NED University on Wednesday.

NED University, which is playing hosts to the event after some two decades, progressed by getting the better of Sindh University Jamshoro 56-26 after leading 28-17 at half time.

Habibullah (18), Arsalan Khan (16) and Ali Hafeez (12) were the principal scorers for future engineers. Shaz Ghori shined for losers with 15.

Greenwich University and Iqra University were knocked out of the event losing to upcountry opponents.

Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) notched up 47-23 victory over Greenwich University with Saad Tariq and Mohammad Zohair Hussain sharing 28 amongst themselves. Hamza Ateeq contributed 8. Asad Qasim scored 5 for losers.

Adnan Ahmed Abid starred for University of Sargodha which emerged 79-33 victorious against Iqra University.

Adnan top scored with 24 followed by Mohammad Zareef 16, Sheron John 14 and Gul Hasan 12. Hasan Ali scored 14 for Iqra.

Earlier, University of Central Punjab, Lahore, got a walkover after documents of some Bannu University players were found incomplete and they refused to play.

Quarter-finals University of Sargodha v Punjab University at 10.00am; Karachi University v Lums at 11.00am; NED University v University of Peshawar at 12.00noon; University of Central Punjab v Balochistan University of IT, Quetta, at 1.00pm.
