KHAIRPUR, Feb 9 An under-trial prisoner was injured in an attack by an armed man in the courtyard of the district and sessions court here on Monday.

Zulfiqar Ali Mari was brought from central jail Khairpur with other prisoners for a hearing of a murder case.

Prior to the hearing the prisoners were sitting in the lawn on the premises of the judicial complex when Zahid Phulpoto opened fire on Mari using a pistol. The attacker, instead of escaping, started shouting slogans and was arrested by the police along with the weapon.

Later, the A-section police reached the scene of crime and took the injured prisoner to the Civil Hospital.

The injured UTP is an accused in the murder case of Ghulam Nabi Phulpoto, who was murdered in April 2007 in Garhi Pul area Khairpur city. The deceased was brother of a local PML-N leader, Ghulam Hyder Phulpoto.

The attacker, Zahid Phulpoto, is said to be brother of the deceased.

The police took other prisoners back to central jail Khairpur.

In another incident, armed people shot dead a boy, Waheed Phulpoto, a student of eighth class, in Tallo Bhando area.

Area people said that the murder of the boy was a response to the attack on the UTP, Zulfiqar Mari.
