KARACHI, April 29: Dr Ghulam Nabi Kazi, WHO provincial operation officer for Sindh, appreciating the poverty alleviation programme initiated by the present government, has underscored the need for continuity of the programmes.

He mentioned that since the programme had been introduced in the remote parts of the province, a marked change could be felt in the public approach towards such schemes.

The strategy to help the needy, with particular reference to children and women, through community workers has resulted in creation of a proper setup under which those assisted are also involved in the income generating activities.

Under the programme, initially introduced at union council Bubak and taluka Sehwan, considered to be among the impoverished parts of Sindh, attempts have been made to strengthen the health sector.

The WHO coordinator particularly referred to contribution made by lady health workers, vaccinators and other paramedical staff.

He said the provincial government had also expanded the scope of operation.—APP
