NEW DELHI, March 27: Police shot dead one person in Ahmedabad, the main city in Gujarat, when they opened fire to disperse clashing mobs on Tuesday night.

The clash coincided with the death of a woman burned in her home in an incident in a town north of the city on Monday.

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee summoned Gujarat’s Chief Minister Narendra Modi to New Delhi to provide an update on developments in the state.
