KARACHI, June 5: A survey has been started for a complete master plan for water and sewerage in katchi abadis and these areas would be brought under the control of the Water Board.

This was said by city Nazim Naimatullah Khan while addressing the Nazims and Naib Nazims of the union councils of Site Town during a visit to the area on Wednesday.

During the visit the city Nazim was accompanied by DCO Karachi Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, M D KWSB Behram Khan and elected representatives and officials of the city government.

Nazim Karachi said that complaints against the Water Board were not without reason and the water problem had assumed greater importance during summer, therefore the KWSB should enforce emergency in the Board.

He said it should be inquired as to how illegal connections in factories and cattle pens were obtained and the Water Board should have a timeframe for their disconnection.

He regretted that the KWSB’s tax revenue from SITE Town was just three per cent and the situations in other towns were no different. “Government organizations cannot be run with only 3 per cent recoveries. The KWSB needs money to manage its affairs and the town and union Nazims should organize camps in their areas and recover the outstanding dues”, he said.

He directed KWSB officials to maintain close liaison with elected representatives and take interest in solving the problems of citizens.

Speaking on the occasion, DCO Karachi, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, said that the areas where people were trying to solve water problems on self-help basis should get priority.

Speaking to the Nazims, MD KWSB, Brig Behram Khan, said the KWSB might have deficiencies but they were being overcome with the consultation of elected representatives. He said the system for the supply of water had been worked out in consultation with town Nazims.

Nazim SITE Town, Amir Nawab, said the water quota of the Town for residential areas had suffered because of supplies to marble factories which had been provided illegal connections. The Nazims and Naib Nazims of the union councils of the Town highlighted the water-related problems and gave suggestions for their solution.

HUDA KI BASTI: The city Nazim has said that during the next financial year the city government will establish a dispensary in the “Khuda Ki Basti” housing scheme in Karachi and in two weeks work will start on the opening of a government school where children will get free education, uniform and books.

He made an announcement in this regard during a visit to “Khuda Ki Basti”, a low cast housing scheme where he laid the foundation-stone of the Phase-II of the scheme.

The Nazim said the Basti will be provided water and electricity on easy instalments and the number of the water tankers was also being increased with immediate effect. He further said that the number of buses-route permits would be increased to solve the transport problem of the area. He said the directives in that regard had been issued.

DCO Karachi, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, DG Katchi Abadis Authority, Tasnim Ahmed Siddiqi, and other officials were also present on the occasion.

The Nazim Karachi was informed that Khuda Ki Basti was being developed on an area of 600 acres; so far 1700 houses had been constructed and the second phase had been started on an area of 40 acres.—APP
