FAISALABAD, Nov 6: People from all walks of life welcomed restoration of ban on serving meals on marriage ceremonies.

City PML-N president Khwaja Islam said the step had been taken by the Nawaz Sharif regime and was implemented in letter and spirit. The present rulers amended the rule just to please wealthy people. But the Supreme Court endorsed the policies of Sharif regime.

Mr Islam, who is a former MPA, said the poor people had been facing problems due to permission for meals on wedding. The government should issue instructions for immediate implementation of the ban so that the poor people could get relief.

Religious leaders Maulana Yousaf Anwar, Tariq Mahmood and Ramzan Anwar said the Supreme Court decision was in accordance with Islamic laws. However, permission for one dish on the Walima ceremonies should be granted.

They said Islam had imposed strong restrictions on wasteful expenses on marriage ceremonies.

Union council Nazims and Naib Nazims Sharafat Ali Khan, Tariq Bashir Ghauri, Zulfiqar Ahmad, Intisar Ahmad, Shakeel Ansari and Tahir Ishaq Ghauri and a number of councillors welcomed the Supreme Court verdict.

They demanded that the government should impose a ban on giving large dowries as the Supreme Court had already declared it a Hindu custom.
