Egypt suffer heaviest defeat

ATHENS, Aug 21: South Korea handed Egypt one of the heaviest defeats ever inflicted in Olympic men's hockey on Saturday, winning 11-0.

But India stormed off the pitch furious with an umpiring decision that cost them their match with New Zealand in overtime.

The Kiwis won 2-1 with a third penalty corner after the final hooter but India argued that the second umpire should not have been allowed to award it.

Once unbeatable India, who now have no chance of making the semi-finals in Athens, refused to talk to reporters and their angry fans had to be escorted out of the grounds by police.

For the Kiwis, and particularly shooter Hayden Shaw, it was sweet relief after losing to the Netherlands in the last seconds when Shaw failed to pull even with a penalty. As the final ball hit the backboard they tossed twirling sticks into the air.

"I'm stoked. I've missed those last minuters twice recently but I learned my lesson," Shaw grinned.

The first half ended with no score but less than a minute after play restarted, Phillip Burrows netted a goal from open play. India fought back with some strong midfield runs but only drew level nine minutes from time with a Dhanraj Pillay corner.

In the last minute, New Zealand won a penalty and earned three more as the ball hit feet or was trapped under the goalie.

Meanwhile, officials rejected a protest by India against their last-minute defeat by New Zealand.

In a two-page ruling, technical delegate Wiert Doyer said the match had not ended when the last penalty was awarded and so, according to official rules, he had no power to overrule any umpire's decision.

New Zealand's winner came from a third penalty corner after the hooter. India cannot now reach the semifinals.

Earlier, the only question about goals was how many of them South Korea would net against Egypt.

In a match which looked more like Saturday morning shooting practice, the Koreans scored five goals in the final 10 minutes and stored up a valuable treasure chest of points in Pool A where the two semifinal slots could be decided on goal difference.
