KARACHI, July 3: President Pervez Musharraf's economic agenda cannot be implemented without improving the law and order situation in the province , says Inspector-General of Police, Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah.

"The police department is fully aware of its responsibilities in this regard," he said while speaking to the industrialists of Korangi Industrial Area here on Friday.

Referring to the seriousness of the incidents of sectarianism and terrorism occurring between May 7 and June 20, he informed the industrialists that basically, two criminal groups were involved.

He said out of 27 cases, 24 had been solved, adding that the police had achieved a success rate of 89 per cent.

IGP Kamal said that the judicial system was being strengthened to dispense quick justice.

Agreeing with points raised by KATI Chairman Mian Zahid Hussain, the IGP said that the Law and Order Board, comprising representatives of Korangi Association and the Police Department, would be formed and a notification would be issued soon after receipt of names of KATI representatives.

He said that the board's members would be issued identity cards, adding holders of these cards would get all possible support from the police.

The board, he said, would meet every month and would be assigned the task of monitoring the day-to-day law and order problems affecting the Korangi Industrial Area.

He agreed with the proposal for the setting up of a police station exclusively for the Korangi Industrial area for which necessary permission would be sought from the Sindh Home Department.

Meanwhile, he issued orders for establishing an Exclusive Police Force for the industrial area that would be headed by a sub-inspector. The force, he said, would remain in touch with the office-bearers of Korangi Association.

Stressing the need for making arrangements for provision of wireless sets and other means of communication, saying it would enable frequent contacts to be established between police pickets and the area's police station.

Conceding that traffic police officials were negligent, the IGP Sindh said that he was not happy with the traffic system, adding that there was a large room for improvement.

He said that necessary steps were being taken to streamline the system.

He said that the Anti-Car Lifting Cell was working successfully and its working would further be improved.

IGP Kamal thanked the Korangi Association and Abdul Haseeb Khan, CEO, Brookes Pharma, for sponsoring and establishing 'Madadgar-15' in the Korangi Industrial Are, saying that it would be equipped with modern equipments, adding that it would play a pioneer role in controlling crime.

S.M. Muneer said that the business community was aware about the difficulties faced by the police, adding that welfare funds would be spent on the well-being of the heirs of the police martyrs.

He said that he was prepared to generate more funds for the purpose if proper system was laid down for the utilisation of the fund.-APP
