PESHAWAR, June 27: Residents of the Khyber Super Market fear outbreak of diseases in the area due to the supply of contaminated water.

"Despite paying hefty bills to the cantonment board in the head of water, the commodity supplied to consumers is unfit for human consumption," said Wajid Ali Shah, a local, told Dawn.

He said that only some flats in the area got clean water, but the rest were supplied with muddy water for the last three years. It was due to this unclean water that many locals had fallen victim to hepatitis and other diseases, but most of these cases went unreported, he said.

Muhammad Naseer, manager of a restaurant in the area, said he paid Rs12,000 per annum to the cantonment board in water bills, but the stuff supplied to his hotel was dirty and not fit even to wash dishes and plates.

Another resident, Khalid Khan, complained that the matter had been brought into the notice of the authorities concerned, but to no avail.

He appealed to the cantonment board authorities to take note of the problem and save people from contaminated water.
