KARACHI, May 31: Various steps to check traffic accidents in Karachi came under discussion and a number of mutually agreed decisions were taken at a meeting of city transporters with Capital City Police Officer, Asad Jehnagir, here on Friday.

Asad Jehangir observed that the ratio of accidents was the index to judge the performance of the traffic system. He pointed out that in Karachi deaths in traffic accidents every year involve 54 per cent of pedestrians and 22 per cent of motorcyclists, while others account for 16 per cent.

The officer stressed the need for mutually agreed decisions and cooperation among transporters, the traffic police and citizens to bring down the ratio of traffic accidents.

Transporter’s representatives briefed the officer on their problems, put forward suggestions for reducing traffic accidents and assured all possible cooperation in that respect.

It was decided that transporters would remove all additional and decorative accessories from their vehicles, would not use extra mirrors and maintain lights properly. The meeting also decided that buses, mini-buses and coaches would ply on the extreme left lane of the road and would strictly follow the bus lane discipline.

The transporters called for setting up of bus stands and removal of encroachments from roads. The officer assured them of all cooperation to solve their problems.

The transporter’s delegation included Irshad Hussain Bukhari of the Karachi Transport Ittehad and Saleem Khan bangash of the National Transport Ittehad.
