Sack Ganguly: Indian greats

Published March 31, 2005

NEW DELHI, March 30: Nothing is working for India’s most successful cricket captain Saurav Ganguly, currently clinging on to the team with support of an artificial respirator. His bat has fallen silent and his captaincy beginning to lose its magical touch.

The calls for his head have grown loud and clear in aftermath of India’s huge defeat against arch rivals Pakistan at Bangalore.

Indian cricket selection committee, however, remains immune to his wretched form. He has been retained captain for one-day series against Pakistan.

“Sack Ganguly and whole selection committee, retorted Bishen Singh Bedi, former Indian skipper.

Sympathy alone won’t help and selection committee will have to Take some unpleasant decisions. When a wound becomes incurable you have to perform surgery. Indian team needs immediate operation before disease spreads in team, he said.

Almost every one connected with cricket think it’s time

for Ganguly to bow out with dignity. “A captain should

lead from the front and not occupy place on strength of his past performance,” former Indian cricketer Mohinder Amarnath said.

But Ganguly doesn’t think so and appeared not bothered by criticism. Immediately after the match he rushed to launch SouravFone, a signature series handsets.

“I have led India in 40-odd Test matches and have nothing to prove to anyone,” he said. Quite a casual remark from a captain, who scored 2, 1, 12, 12 and 21 in last five innings.

Former India ‘A’ coach and Test batsman Sandeep Patil has hit out at national selectors for not keeping faith in wicket keeper Dinesh Karthik for One-day International series against Pakistan.

“Karthik is a devastating one-day batsman and should have been retained for ODIs too after Test series. He should have been automatic choice for the slot,” Patil said.—Agencies
