GUJRANWALA, March 29: The anti-terrorism court on Tuesday accepted the acquittal plea of the former medical superintendent of the Allama Iqbal Memorial Hospital and rejected the same plea of 21 others following their involvement in the Sialkot jail incident.

Those whose plea was rejected include former Gujranwala DIG Malik Mohammad Iqbal, former Sialkot DPO Amjad Javed Saleemi, former Gujrat DPO Raja Munawwar Hasan, former Sialkot jail superintendent Sikandar Hayat, former deputy superintendents Raja Mushtaq and Ghulam Sarwar, former Allama Iqbal Memorial Hospital surgeon Dr Sajjad Ahmad and ex-SHO inspector Zulfikar Ali Virk.

Former jail assistant superintendent Akhtar Iqbal had withdrawn his acquittal plea on the previous hearing.

The judge had already rejected the plea to transfer the case to the district and sessions court filed by the defence counsel.

The court adjourned the case till April 1.

CLEANLINESS: The city tehsil council will launch a cleanliness campaign in each union council on April 1.

The decision was taken at a meeting held here on Tuesday with the city Nazim in the chair.

Following complains that sanitary workers were performing duty at the residences of the influential instead of cleaning streets and bazaars, the city Nazim visited some areas and expressed his displeasure over the poor cleanliness arrangements there.

Later, at a meeting he asked all sanitary inspectors and workers to ensure cleanliness of the city otherwise a strict action would be taken against them.

SUICIDE: A woman committed suicide by taking poisonous pills in Garjakh on Tuesday.

Zahida Bibi took poison following a quarrel with her husband, Aslam, over a petty issue. She was taken to the DHQ Hospital where she died.

Police are investigating.
