GILGIT, March 23: The recently removed Inspector-General of Northern Areas Police, Sakhiullah Tareen, and four others were killed in an ambush near Gilgit on Wednesday, police sources said. The official, who was removed and made OSD last week, was ambushed by unidentified persons at Jutal, some 30km northeast of Gilgit. He was seriously injured and removed to a local military hospital but he died at around 8:30pm.

Four police personnel, identified as Mohammad Hussain, Ibrahim, Nadeem and another unidentified police man of his escort were also killed. The deceased official’s son, Safiullah Tareen and daughter-in-law were also injured critically. His driver and personal guard remained unhurt. The incident created panic in the troubled city, Gilgit.
