MULTAN, Jan 27: Two constables and an alleged outlaw were killed in what the police claimed an encounter took place on Thursday evening.

According to police, a raid was conducted on an information that members of the Hashim gang were gathered in a house in Jalalpur Khakhi village.

When police surrounded the house, it dawned that the outlaws were not there. In the meanwhile, the outlaws allegedly opened fire from a house outside the police cordon. A shootout followed when the police retaliated as a result of which constables Mujahid Husain and Afzal and an alleged outlaw, Aziz, were killed.

Constable Mujahid belonged to Dijkot, Faisalabad district, while Afzal to the Galeywal of Lodhran district. Police authorities said the rest of the 'gangsters' had managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness.

They, however, claimed that teams were busy in tracking down the culprits. They said the gang had been involved in criminal activities in the area and its members were wanted by the police.

CONVICT HANGED: A murder convict was hanged at the central jail here on Thursday morning. Ghulam Shabbir was handed down death penalty by the Khanewal district and sessions court on March 12, 1996, in a murder case registered in 1993. He belonged to Mulapur village of Kabirwala tehsil.

He was employed with a transport company as a ticket checker. He had stabbed and killed a matric student, Abdul Jabbar, when he had reportedly refused to buy a ticket. A provincial minister who hailed from Khanewal district reportedly tried his best to strike a deal between the families of convict and the deceased to avoid Shabbir's execution but to no avail.
