KARACHI, Jan 10: A group of mobile phone dealers has expressed its reservations about the introduction of computerized mobile phone tracking system.

The group, which includes some former office-bearers of the Karachi Electronics Dealers Association (KEDA), also criticized the process of documentation under which mobile phone dealers have to fill in data forms vis-à-vis sale/purchase of any mobile phone set.

While introducing the system, the present office-bearers of the KEDA said that it would help check trading in snatched/ stolen phone sets. However, the dejected group of dealers contends that restriction on the trading in second-hand cell-phones would seriously hamper their business.

The Sindh home department had imposed a 10-day ban on the sale and purchase of used mobile phones and lifted the same on January 1 with the launching of the tracking system.

Recently, a few people were detained for opposing the system and were released only after making a pledge in writing that they would not do so again. A spokesman for the KEDA has claimed that the system has curbed mobile phone snatching and theft incidents by 60 per cent. -PPI
