MIRPURKHAS, Jan 5: Employees of the taluka municipal administration, Mirpurkhas, on Wednesday observed a strike and closed all offices when the incharge of the vehicle section of the TMA was assaulted by a councillor of the City union council-3.

The vehicle in charge, Faiz Mohammad, was allegedly beaten by the councillor, Iqbal Nadeem, first in Gharibabad and again at the TMA's office, which led to the protest by the employees.

Later, Mirpurkhas Taluka Nazim Syed Inayat Ali Shah intervened and called police. The councillor apologized in presence of the taluka nazim and officers. When contacted by this correspondent, the councillor said Faiz Mohammad had not sent a refuse collection van to his area despite having promised to do that and heaps of garbage lay in the area.

ARRESTED: The Satellite town police in raids at different places on Tuesday night arrested narcotic peddlers - Khalil, Yaqoob, Abdul Hameed, Abdul Aziz and Riaz - and seized five kilograms of charas. Cases have been registered against the arrested people.

KILLED: A man, Mohammad Lateef, son of Din Mohammad, was killed after his bicycle was hit by a speedy coaster near the Rabi petrol pump on the Mirpurkhas-Mirwah road on Tuesday. The taluka police have registered a case against the driver on the complaint of Din Mohammad. Police also impounded the coaster.

PMA: The president of the Mirpurkhas chapter of the Pakistan Medical Association, Dr Nigar Ahmad, and the general-secretary, Dr Shamsul Arfeen Khan, have congratulated the newly-elected president, Dr Umer Ayub, and general-secretary, Dr Sher Shah Syed, of the association. In a joint statement issued here on Wednesday, they hoped that the new body of the PMA would resolve problems being faced by doctors and paramedical staff.

COTTON: Cotton growers have suffered big losses in Mirpurkhas, Umerkot and Sanghar districts. It was stated at a recent meeting of the Sindh Abadgar Board, district chapter.

The meeting pointed out that the TCP purchased a large quantity of cotton from ginning factories in Mirpurkhas but they did not pay fixed rate of Rs925 per maund to growers.
