KARACHI, Jan 4: As many as 5,969 vehicles were added in the existing traffic population of Karachi between April and September 2004. This was stated at the 10th meeting of the board of District Regional Transport Authority, chaired by DCO Fazalur Rahman.

The newly-inducted vehicles include loading vehicles, mini-buses, buses, large sized buses of Urban Transport Scheme, taxis, coaches, rickshaws etc. It was stated that route permits of 234 vehicles had been cancelled for two months during this period for violation of traffic laws. Whereas, route permits of 157 vehicles were amended.

The meeting decided to take legal action against transporters, indulging in violation of traffic rules. The participants of the meeting also expressed concern over display of ugly advertisements on UTS buses and decided to bring UTS operators under prescribed code of conduct. -PPI
