KARACHI, Nov 26: The academic council of the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) on Friday reviewed measures taken so far for establishing an examination department at the varsity.

The meeting was chaired by the DUHS Vice-Chancellor, Prof Masood Hameed Khan. The VC also briefed members of the council about developments made yet with regard to transfer of enrolment of students of old batches of the Dow Medical College and the Sindh Medical College from the University of Karachi to the DUHS.

Sources privy to the meeting said that the VC explained to the members that establishment of an examination department was necessary for getting recognition from the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.

The meeting was informed about rules and regulations drafted for the examination department's working and conduct of examinations. The DUHS examination department at present was being headed by a retired KU officer appointed on ad hoc basis.

The council members unanimously approved the establishment of the examination department besides expressing their support for the actions taken by the VC for enrolment and conduct of examinations of varsity students, added the source.

It was further learnt that the VC took the body into confidence about the outcome of a meeting on the issue of transfer of enrolment held at the Governor House on Thursday with Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan in the chair.

He said that after deliberations, it was decided in principle that the DHUS may conduct the exams of students of MBBS First Prof, after an amicable transfer of enrolment from KU.

Both universities had been asked to resolve the enrolment issue amicably keeping in view recommendations of their respective statutory bodies, added the source. The proceedings of the DUHS academic council, held on Friday, would now be presented to the varsity's syndicate for approval, which was scheduled to meet on Saturday.

The minutes of the meetings in question were likely to be forwarded to the PMDC, which would meet in Islamabad on December 4 and 5, added another source, saying this would help expedite the processing of DUHS's case of recognition with the PMDC. A PMDC team was also due to visit the varsity soon.

DMC Principal: The VC of the DUHS has appointed Dr Irshad Qazi, a professor of the Psychiatry department, as principal of the Dow Medical College. The VC had earlier been officiating as principal of the college - a constituent unit of the university.
