KARACHI, Sept 27: Police was placed on red alert in the city on Monday for a possible backlash in view of the killing of a most wanted terrorist in Nawabshah.

"We have intensified security at different places in the city to meet any eventuality and it will be in effect till further orders," Capital City Police Officer Tariq Jamil told Dawn.

He said that no untoward incident was reported from the city on Monday, but, the police would remain on red alert till further orders. DIG Operations Fayyaz Leghari said: "We have increased the security after we came to know about the killing of Amjad Farooqui in an encounter. We decided to elevate the security measures for possible terrorist attacks."

The officials said that leaves of policemen were cancelled and all available strength would be utilized for deployment and mobilization. Snap-checking would be increased besides the mobility of police in some identified areas where the police suspect hideouts of terrorists, they said.

Sources said that trained commandos had been deployed at very sensitive places like foreign consulates, offices of high commissions, residences of foreign dignitaries and multinational companies. Besides, they said that security had also been increased at airport, railway stations, trade centres, and entry and exit routes of the city.

They said law enforcement agencies picked up a wanted suspect, Mansoor alias Ibrahim Chhotu, in Gulsitan-i-Jauhar on Sunday evening. A team had been constituted to interrogate the suspect, they added.
