KARACHI: Three die in road accidents

KARACHI, Sept 24: A policeman among three persons died in separate road accidents in different areas on Friday. In North Nazimabad, a policeman died in an accident early on Friday morning.

Police said that ASI Atiq Ahmed suffered severe head injury as he slipped from his motorcycle near Five Star traffic section. The seriously injured policeman was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

According to the police, he was father of two children. A 20-year-old cyclist died when a speeding minibus of G-25 route knocked him down in North Nazimabad. His body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for postmortem examination. Police said that the driver escaped following the accident.

A pedestrian was knocked down to death near New Sabzi Mandi within the jurisdiction of Sachal police station. Police said that a speeding vehicle hit and injured a young man who was crossing the road near New Sabzi Mandi. The vehicle escaped following the accident. The seriously wounded man was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

KILLED: A teenager was stabbed to death allegedly by his friend in Saeedabad on Friday. According to police, Ismail stabbed his friend Saad over a petty dispute in Saeedabad. The wounded victim was taken to the nearby hospital, where he died during treatment.

DROWNED: A nine-year-old boy died after drowning in Lyari River within the jurisdiction of Pak Colony police station. Police said that the boy was playing near the river when he fell. Area people and rescue workers of the fire department made several attempts to recover the boy, but failed.

SUSPENDED: Chief Minister's adviser on excise and taxation M.A. Jalil suspended on Friday an intelligence officer and his staff for alleged irregularities in the last week's recovery of 720kg charas.

According to adviser's spokesman, Intelligence Officer Lala Tariq Ahmed Khan was allegedly involved in irregularities in the last week's seizure of 720kg charas. An inquiry into the matter had been assigned to the ANF, the spokesman added.
