KHAIRPUR: Protest against torture

KHAIRPUR, Aug 27: A large number of people including women and children staged a demonstration outside the Civil Hospital on Friday against alleged police torture on a villager.

They raised slogans against the police and held a sit-in at the main gate of the hospital. They said that the A-section police had arrested seven persons a week back and tortured Ghulam Ali Katohar, a resident of Dhani Bux Katohar village.

He was admitted to the Civil Hospital. PML-F leader and former MPA Zafar Iqbal Bilal along with party workers reached the spot and held negotiations with the protesters.

The PML-F leader and protesters went to the hospital and met Ghulam Ali who told that he was tortured by the police. He said there was no case against him. Sindh minister Dr Sohrab Sarki also visited the civil hospital and met the injured.

He told newsmen that action would be taken against the police if it was proved that Ghulam Ali had been tortured. The civil surgeon of the hospital told the minister that the patient was had been brought to the hospital by the police at mid-night.

He said X-ray and ultrasound were conducted and the medical certificate would be issued soon. The A-Section police alleged that Ghulam Ali Katohar was involved in a narcotic case and he attempted to commit suicide while in custody. It was because of the suicide attempt that he was admitted to the hospital.

ACCIDENT: A man, Ghulam Qadir Ujjan, 40, was killed when he was hit by a motorcycle on the National Highway on Friday. He was taken to the Civil Hospital where he died.
