KARACHI, Aug 5: The Joint Doctors Action Committee (JDAC) on Thursday demanded of the government to withdraw false cases against the doctor brothers Dr Akmal Waheed and Dr Arshad, and release them immediately.

Speaking at a news conference at the Karachi Press Club, Dr Misbahul Aziz, Dr Sher Shah Syed, Dr Rasool Bux, Dr Fauzia Akmal and Dr Sohail Akhtar of the JDAC said if there were any true charges against them, they should be tried in the session court instead of an anti-terrorism court. They also demanded B class facilities for the doctors in jail.

The JDAC also took notice of the arrest of another doctor Ismail Sheikh, who was arrested on the charge of distributing pamphlets, calling for a stop to harassment of doctors.

"This is unimaginable in the Islamic society where human rights are supposed to be respected in the highest order," they said. They also accused the police of harassing five nurses of the Sindh Government Qatar Hospital on the basis of an irrelevant case. "This behaviour with health workers is very shameful, despite the presence of two doctors on the posts of Sindh governor and chief minister." - PPI
