SUKKUR, July 9: About 15 per cent water shortage was recorded at the Sukkur Barrage on Friday while 15 to 20 per cent shortage was recorded in the Kirthar, Dadu and Rice canals, originating from the right bank of the barrage.
According to the indent, water was flowing in the four left bank canals - Nara, Rohri, Khairpur feeder east and west. Irrigation authorities said that 135,000 cusecs of extra water was released from the Tarbela Dam on Friday which would reach the barrage by July 20 and overcome the shortage.
As far as water shortage in the Kirthar, Dadu and Rice canals was concerned, the officials said that due to rice sowing, demand of water had increased which could not be coped with till the water reached the barrage.
On Friday, Sukkur upstream was recorded at 87,257 cusecs while downstream remained at 30,300 cusecs. Guddu upstream was recorded at 146,200 cusecs while downstream was at 110,200 cusecs. Kotri upstream was at 38,800 cusecs while downstream remained closed.
Taunsa upstream remained at 179,300 cusecs while downstream was at 151,000 cusecs. At Cheshma, upstream flow was recorded at 230,000 cusecs while downstream was at 109,000 cusecs. Kalabagh upstream was at 219,000 cusecs and downstream 211,500 cusecs.
PROTEST: Rickshaw drivers of Mirpur Mathelo observed a strike and staged a sit-in outside the office of the taluka police officer on Friday following alleged manhandling of two rickshaw drivers by the police.
A party of the Mirpur Mathelo police was on its way in a mobile when the traffic was jammed. This infuriated the police who manhandled rickshaw drivers Lal Bakhsh and Irfan Kolachi.
Later, hundreds of rickshaw drivers observed a strike and staged a sit-in in front of the TPO office, who assured them of early action against the police officials responsible for the incident. On the assurance, the protest was ended.
