NAWABSHAH, May 26: The district council here on Wednesday adopted a resolution against the supply of turbid water to two union councils of the city. Convenor Khalid Channa presided over the meeting also attended by District Nazim Faryal Talpur.

Qamarunnisa Dhamrah tabled the resolution, demanding installation of water purification plants in union council-5 and 6. Ms Dhamrah claimed that drinking water supplied to the two UCs carried dust particles thus it was unsafe for human consumption. The council unanimously passed the resolution.

The members condemned the supply of contaminated water to the residents of Hyderabad, causing death of several people. Mustafa Soomro said that the Al-Noor and Sakrand sugar mills had not yet paid dues to growers and tabled a resolution, demanding payment of arrears to the sugarcane growers. The council adopted the resolution.

Mr Soomro demanded that reports of the accounts committee should be presented before the council. Accounts committee chairman Hassan Bhatti said that he had written letters to officials concerned in this connection but no response had been received from them.

Bashir Jamali submitted a resolution, demanding opening of the Monotechnic college Sakrand which had been closed for the last two years. Riaz Zardari said that some 22 employees of the district council were sacked in 1997 and three of them were reinstated. He demanded that others should be reinstated in their posts.

DOCTORS' PROTEST: Doctors and paramedical staff of the People's Medical College on Wednesday observed a token hunger strike and boycotted their duties for about one hour to press for the arrest of accused who had attacked doctors and other staff of the hospital.
