GUJRANWALA, April 14: An assistant food controller and four inspectors were suspended from service after a scam of the defective wheat procurement was surfaced in Kamoke on Wednesday.

Punjab Food secretary Shahid Hassan visited the procurement centre where the AFC and food officials exchanged heated arguments with him over the issue of purchasing defective wheat. They also misconducted with their senior Food official.

Secretary Shahid Hussain ordered an inquiry into the scam while deputy director Zubair Aslam suspended AFC Abdul Hai and inspectors Jalil Ahmad, Muhammad Anwer, Muhammad Riaz and Riaz Ahmad Khan.

It was stated that they had purchased about 810 defective wheat bags and stored it at the procurement centre for their onward supply to floor mills. When contacted, the deputy director admitted the defective wheat purchase and said the payment of wheat bags had not been made to farmers/commission agents of the grain market.

THRASHED: A Wapda team led by recovery tehsildar was beaten up by a dozen assailants and got freed a heavyweight defaulter from its custody in Jaserwala village on Wednesday.

Gepco's Cantonment circle recovery tehsildar Muhammad Nasir and his staff went to arrest furnace owner Muhammad Ashraf for not paying outstanding dues of Rs8.4 million.

As the recovery team arrested him, about a dozen assailants attacked the team, thrashed its members and had him freed from their custody. Police have registered a case against the accused and are investigating.

DEATH WARRANTS: A local court on Wednesday issued death warrants against a convict in a murder case. The judge ordered the hanging of the condemned on May 5. Nawaz had killed his rival Aslam in Wazirabad some two years ago. The sessions court handed him down death sentence while the high court and Supreme Court upheld the decision of the lower court. The president had also rejected his clemency appeal.
