KARACHI, March 29: A number of city areas getting water from the Hub dam source are facing water shortage reportedly owing to faulty distribution system and leaking pipelines. The localities which have been hit hard for the last one week include Shershah , Banaras, SITE residential and industrial areas and different sectors of Orangi and Baldia.

Residents of the affected localities said although they are supplied water after every two three days, the KWSB officials often fail to implement their water supplying schedule, forcing them to either purchase water through tankers at exorbitant rates or consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.

"It is for the last one week or so that we have been getting supply with such a low pressure that we cannot store water for even one day," a councillor of Orangi's Union Council No 9 said.

Criticizing the KWSB officials concerned for not taking measures for repairing leaking pipelines, he said on the one hand a considerable quantity of water was being wasted through leaking pipelines at different places and, on the other, water coming out from such lines is causing damage to roads and streets.

Complaints of persisting water shortage have also been received from Korangi No 1. The residents of the affected locality regretted that although they have been facing water crisis for the last fortnight, the KWSB officials concerned have not taken measures to restore normal supply despite a number of complaints lodged to them.

They demanded of the city Nazim and the KWSB managing director to direct the officials concerned to immediately remove the fault responsible for water shortage as they cannot afford to buy private tankers.
