DADU, March 10: A seven-year-old boy of the Bahawlpur village, Johi taluka, died at a private clinic here on Wednesday evening. Earlier, a World Health Organization team, led by Dr A. D. Bola G. Lambo, arrived here in the morning and examined the boy, Sardar Ali , after child specialist Dr Ismail Lashari informed the team that the boy had polio. Tests confirmed that the boy was a polio patient.

Niaz Hussain, father of the boy, complained that health officials visited the area rarely. He said polio drops had been administered to his son one year back. Meanwhile, the DCO directed health officials to administer polio drops to children in remote areas of the district so that the disease could be eradicated in the area.

He was talking to doctors at a programme at the civil hospital during a polio campaign on Wednesday. He said action would be taken against doctors and health officials who did not perform duties during the polio campaign.

Jirga: The government should ban jirgas, introduce laws against Karo-kari and repeal the Hudood Ordinance.

This was demanded by Sindh Education Foundation programme officer Najma Mallah while speaking at a seminar in the Nazir Ahmad Brohi village on Wednesday.

She regretted that women were being deprived of their basic rights by feudal lords. Ms Mallah observed that women were being killed in remote areas to settle personal scores and the government was not taking any action against the culprits.

Apa Akhtar said the people were not allowing their daughters to get education. She called upon NGOs and social workers to provide educational facilities to women. Nilofar Brohi demanded that the government should provide equal facilities to women.
