GUJRANWALA, Feb 23: The Punjab government has approved plan to construct new jails in Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Narowal and Mandi Bahauddin, and released funds for the project.

This was stated by IG (prisons) Pervez Rahim Rajput while he was talking to this correspondent here on Monday. He said the Gujranwala central jail would be made district jail and a new one be converted into central jail. The new jail would be constructed at 50-acre tract.

The Gujranwala jail was overcrowded because there were no jails in Narowal, Hafizabad and Mandi Bahauddin and the prisoners of these districts were detained in Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot jails.

The IG prisons said the two new jails for women would be constructed in Rawalpindi and Faisalabad while women jail in Multan was already functioning. He said the prisoners would be provided better facilities in jails.

SHOT DEAD: An industrialist was shot dead near Ladhewala Warraich village by two men one of whom the driver of a rickshaw, which was hired by him, on Monday.

Reports said Liaquat Ali, who used to import and export goods to China, was on his way to Qila Deedar Singh along with his guest by hiring a rickshaw. When they reached near the village, rickshaw driver Saifullah stopped the three-wheeler where his accomplice, Irfan Butt, was already present.

The driver and his aide snatched cash in Pakistani and foreign currency from them and on resistance shot dead the trader. However, his partner remained unhurt. Later, police arrested the rickshaw driver and recovered the cash. They were in search of his accomplice.

POLICEMEN BOOKED: On the orders of a sessions court, Wahando police on Monday registered a case against three police officials, including an SHO, for illegally detaining a woman for a murder case investigation.

According to reports, Wahando police caught Sughran Bibi for her alleged involvement in a murder and detained her at police station at night, which was against a court ruling.

A court of law sent the accused to jail on judicial remand and ordered police to register a case against the police officials for illegally detaining the woman.

The policemen included Wahando police inspector, SHO Chaudhry Tassadaq Husain, sub-inspector Muhammad Amin (investigating officer), and head constable Muhammad Arshad Cheema.

SECURITY: The district police have heightened security at all sensitive places, including mosques and imambargahs, and set up control room at the DPO office for Muharram.

DPO Saud Aziz on Monday elaborated on the security plan and said tight security had been ensured to guard against any untoward incident. He added that 477 processions would be taken out in the district.
