KARACHI, Feb 22: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has asserted that the government has been taking all possible steps to end the tradition of karo kari (honour killings).
He stated this while talking to a delegation of women working for human rights, who called on him at the Governor House on Sunday. The governor said that Sindh government would not withdraw its efforts for elimination of karo kari at any cost. He said that police officers had been warned that no negligence would be tolerated in this respect.
Referring to the case of Shaista Almani, he said the government was paying full attention towards providing protection and other facilities to her. He viewed the tradition of karo kari could be eradicated from society only through continuous and joint efforts.
BIRD FLU: Talking to another delegation, the governor stressed the need for ending the effects of negative propaganda against the poultry industry and said it was unnecessary to fear and avoid eating chicken meat.
The delegation included the Karachi Wholesalers Poultry Association representatives including Munir Qureshi, Dr Zafarul Islam, Shakil Hashmi, Sohail Shams and Akhter Siddiqui.
The governor said that proper measures would be taken to removing apprehensions from the minds of citizens regarding chickens. He said there was need for joint efforts to counter the propaganda against poultry industry and assured the association of every possible co-operation in this regard.
Dr Ibad directed the officials concerned for arrangement of programmes by experts at the provincial level for apprising the masses of the actual situation.
Earlier, the delegation told him that the World Health Organization and health department had made it clear that no case of bird flu was reported in any of the SAARC countries. -PPI
