PESHAWAR, Feb 12: The city district government has failed to replace the exposed electricity wires on the main Jamrud road posing a threat to the lives of the people.

Sources said that the administration of the city district's town-III, supposed to replace the exposed electricity cable, could not paying attention to it owing to financial constraints. An official said that the power cables, stretching over three kilometres between a bus stop adjacent to the runway of the Peshawar airport and Spin Jumat had long outlived its life span.

Exposed parts of the cable had been temporarily repaired to avoid any incident. Officials of the City Development and Municipal Department (CDMD), planning and development body of the provincial metropolis, held the town administration responsible for the mess.

They said that the road had recently been handed over to the town-III and the city government was responsible to fulfil its responsibilities. They said that CDMD had no concern with the road's maintenance and supervision after handing it over to the town administration.

They said that the cable had completed its life, but the town administration had no funds to replace the old cable. A concerned official said that the CDMD would replace the cable from Gora Qabristan to Runway, measuring two kilometres. The remaining portion, officials said, required about Rs1 million. However the town administration lacked funds to replace the old cable.

When contacted Town-III Nazim Yasin Khalil said that they were given the responsibility of the road's maintenance two months ago, but despite repeated requests the required funds were not transferred.

He said that certainly the CDMD would have allocated some funds for the road's repair during the current fiscal budget, which should also have been given to the town-III to carry out some necessary work.
