KARACHI, Feb 12: A passerby died and five others were injured, including a policeman, in a cross fire between police and armed suspects in Lyari on Thursday evening.

Lyari Town Police Officer Ali Mohsin told Dawn that three policemen were going in a private vehicle on Mewashah Road, when they spotted suspects Hasan alias Hasoo, Tariq and three others - all members of notorious Arshad Papoo group.

The policemen tried to chase them, however, the suspects retaliated by opening fire at the police. In the cross fire, one pedestrian died and five others, including ASI Ayaz, were wounded. Police said that the suspects entered into the Singolane and managed to escape.

Police said that Yasir, 30, died on the spot while Khalid, 30, Razzak, 30, Rehman, 30 and Nasir, 20 were injured. All the four wounded and the body of the deceased were taken to the Civil Hospital. ASI Ayaz, who was also injured in the cross fire, was taken to the Aga Khan Hospital for treatment.
