LARKANA, Jan 26: The Larkana District Council has expressed concern over the shortage of medicines at hospitals, rural health centres and basic health units of the district and called for early supply of drugs.

Tabling a resolution at the council's session here on Monday, Aijaz Leghari said the people had suffered due to the short supply of medicines to hospitals and health centres for the last six months.

District council chief whip Amir Bakhsh Gaad, Mohammad Hayat Shaikh, Muhib Pirzado, Ghulam Rasool Noonari and Barkat Shaikh supported the resolution, saying residents of remote areas were deprived of their right to get medicines.

Mr Gaad said the district government had to run 80 rural and basic health units from the budget of 42 health centres. The acting convener of the council, Badaruddain Abbasi, appointed a four-member committee, headed by the chairman of the district council's health sub-committee, to submit a report in a week regarding the position of the medicines stock available with the health department.

In another resolution of Mr Leghari, the district council asked local health officials to appoint woman doctors in rural hospitals as in their absence women faced problems in availing health facilities.

Bagi Union Council Nazim Muhib Pirzado protested against the inclusion of some portion of his union council in the Dokri Union Council and demanded that the decision should be reverted.

The council unanimously passed the resolution and also supported the proposal of supplying gas to Balhreji, Haji Lal Bakhsh Shaikh, Haji Mashroi, Bagi, Bindee and Gullan Wahan villages and adjoining areas of Moenjodaro.

Ghulam Rasool Noonari's resolution demanding rehabilitation of the defective drainage system of the Badah town was also adopted unanimously. Badah-I Union Council Nazim Mohammad Khan Channa, Badar Abbasi and others supported the resolution.

The council deferred a resolution of Amir Bakhsh Gaad for Tuesday which sought to discuss the poor law and order situation in the district. It would also discuss a proposal of extending the date for entries in voter lists and correcting mistakes on Tuesday.

Hayat Shaikh tabled the motion, saying people in remote areas were unaware of the deadline for registering their names in the lists. The members criticized the absence of district officers from the meeting. The convener asked the council officer to issue letters to the officers to attend the council's meetings.
