SIALKOT, Jan 8: A constable was shot dead while another sustained serious injuries late Wednesday night in a firing by three car riders at a picket near Nole-Uggoki village, Sialkot tehsil.

Sources said the Uggoki police had set up the picket for snap checking. They signalled a car to stop, but the unidentified riders opened fire on the police party. Constable Liaquat Ali died instantly while constable Sabir Hussain suffered serious bullet wounds. The outlaws managed to escape in their vehicle while firing in the air. The injured constable was admitted to the DHQ Hospital, Sialkot.

Scores of people, including high-ranking police officials, attended the funeral prayers of the constable at the Sialkot Police Lines.

GETS DEATH: A court on Thursday handed down death sentence and fined Rs100,000 to a convict in a murder case. According to the prosecution, the convict had shot dead trader Altaf Hussain during dacoity in Naikapura on July 20, 1994.
