LAHORE, Jan 1: The Punjab MMA president has suspended the membership of three MPAs of the alliance who voted for Gen Pervez Musharraf in the confidence vote on Thursday.

Hafiz Idrees has also issued show-cause notices to the three - Fiazul Hasan Chuhan, Maulana Ghulam Farid Hazarvi and Syed Ijaz Husain Bukhari.

He said the three would be expelled from the alliance if they did not explain why they had voted for Gen Musharraf.

Unconstitutional: Nawaz League's Khwaja Saad Rafiq on Thursday termed the trust vote for the president unconstitutional. He said the step had imposed a remote-controlled democracy on the country. He held the PML-Q and the MMA responsible for the "tragedy".

Awami Qiadat Party information secretary Muhammad Mahdi said the highest turnout in the Punjab Assembly had sent a message to the smaller units of the federation that Gen Musharraf was the president of the Punjab. This, he said, would not be a good omen for the federation.
