RAWALPINDI, Aug 30: About Rs7 million, two cars, gold ornaments and electronic items were looted in two robberies on Friday, police and victims said.

In the first incident, the house of Tariq Omer, a PTCL director, was ransacked by five robbers who held the family hostage at gunpoint and made off with the booty.

Tariq Omer, a resident of Chuck Jilal Deen, in an FIR lodged with Sadar Baruni police, said he was sleeping at the ground floor of his house, while his newly-wed son and daughter-in-law were at the first floor when he heard the couple screaming in the early hours of Friday.

He added that when he went upstairs, he found the couple being held hostage by armed men. The robbers also took Tariq at gunpoint and threatened to kill his son and his wife if cash and valuables were not handed over to them, the police said.

The robbers looted gold ornaments weighing 100 Tolas, Rs80,000 in cash, four television sets, two decks, one CD player, two mobile telephone sets and other valuables. They loaded the booty on two official cars, (IDJ-2842) and (GAJ-4170), parked in the porch of the house and escaped.

In the other incident, four robbers snatched Rs6.25 million from a man while he was on his way home after drawing cash from Muslim Commercial Bank, Satellite Town branch, the police said.

Syed Anser Abbas, a resident of Sector I-10, lodged an FIR with the New Town police, saying he and his friend were going home in a taxi after drawing cash from the bank when four youths, riding in a car, intercepted them on Saidpur Road and took them at gunpoint.

The young men, who appeared to be Afghans, snatched the cash and escaped towards Islamabad on their car, the robbery victim told the police.

In a similar incident on Thursday, a man was robbed of Rs90,000 in Satellite Town, the police said.

Salamat Ali, a resident of Satellite Town, in a complaint lodged with the police, said he was on his way home when two persons riding in a car blocked his way and snatched cash from him.

CARS STOLEN: Two cars, RIX-1999 and LXM-182, were stolen from Sadiqabad and Saddar, respectively, on Friday, police said.

TWO KILLED: Two persons were killed in accidents in Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Thursday, police said.

In the first incident, an unidentified person was run over by a speeding vehicle while crossing a road in Sector I-10/1.

Similarly, an identified person was killed after being hit by a car in Westridge, police said.
