LAHORE, Feb 17: Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan on Tuesday told the Punjab Assembly that the depots of Nato forces were not being shifted to Punjab.

Winding up speech on law and order in the house, he dispelled the reports about shifting of Nato depots to Punjab. “Neither any such proposal is under consideration nor has the federal government asked the provincial administration to do so,” he made it clear.

Earlier, Rana Sanaullah said two model police stations would be set up in every district and then this process would be generalised to other police stations. He assured the house that the government would consider all the suggestions of the members to improve law and order situation.

On a point of order, opposition’s Qamar Hayat Kathia objected to the chief minister’s providing funds to Balochistan for setting up a cardiology centre. The matter led to an altercation between Mr Kathia and the law minister, which prompted the opposition to walk out.

However, on the directive of the speaker, treasury members Muhammad Aslam Kharal and Rana Muhammad Iqbal brought them back to the house.

RESOLUTIONS: The Punjab Assembly unanimously passed two resolutions regarding increase in honorarium of Maktab schools’ teachers and provision of space to young lawyers in the district bars.

Treasury member Nighat Nasir Sheikh moved the resolution for increasing the monthly honorarium of Maktab schoolteachers from Rs250 to Rs1,000. However, the law minister suggested a change to the resolution that a raise should be given up to Rs500.

Another treasury MPA, Tayyaba Zameer, suggested that the government provide some land to young lawyers in the district bars. The law minister said they (lawyers) should be given space provided there is any state land in the respective bars.

The movers agreed to the minister’s suggestions and the house approved both resolutions.

Meanwhile, the house pended Farah Deeba’s resolution pertaining to evolving a comprehensive policy to start separate transport service for women. Nasim Lodhi’s resolution regarding residential colony for the Punjab Assembly employees was also kept pending on request by opposition member Amir Sultan Cheema as the mover was not present.

On the resolution of opposition MPA Samina Khawar Hayat, Rana Sanaullah said the government had taken effective measures to control ‘obscenity’ through stage plays. — APP
