PESHAWAR, Jan1: A police constable was killed when unidentified persons blew up a checkpost here on Thursday morning while a sanitary worker sustained injuries in another blat.

According to police unidentified persons blew up ‘Jabba Masjid post’ on Pajagi Road by planting explosive device beneath its foundations at 4:10am.

An official said that constable Asif son of Tawas Khan resident of Charsadda had just returned to the post from his night patrolling duty and was asleep when fell prey to the bomb blast.

He said the explosive had been planted beneath a wall of the post, which was exploded with help of a remote control.

An official of the bomb disposal squad said that explosive was local made and weighed about 15 kilogram. He said the explosive seemed to be of low quality otherwise it would have also destroyed the nearby buildings and mosque.

SSP Qazi Jamilur Rehman when contacted told Dawn that it could be a reaction to the military operation in Khyber Agency. It seemed that organised militants were involved in the sabotage act instead of ordinary criminals, he added.

The police, he said, had beefed up security and established checkpoints at entry and exit points but the border area with tribal agencies was so vast that it couldn’t be manned.

The funeral of the police constable was offered at Malak Saad Police Lines.

Police have registered a case.

In the second incident a device planted at a garbage dumping site in Safdar Town Gulbahar No 4 went off at 10:30am.
