LAHORE, Dec 29: Pakistan Hockey Federation secretary Asif Bajwa has urged hockey coaches to educate youngsters with modern scientific methods.

He was speaking here on Monday at the FIH coaching course which is in full swing under the supervision of FIH coaching manager Tayyab Ikram at the National Hockey Stadium.

Bajwa said one of the downfall of hockey in Pakistan was lack of modern techniques by the coaches and they were using obsolete methods to teach the youngsters.

“I give my own example when I started playing hockey we were told by our coaches just go out for attack and we were not told about other important aspects of the game including various tactics and manoeuvring in defence, reading certain match situations and switching over to various positions by realising demanding situations,” he said.

“Unfortunately we did not make good efforts to improve knowledge of our coaches whereas other nations gave special attentions to this aspect and gained progress and now they are maintaining supremacy over us,” he maintained.

The former Olympian urged the participants of the course to learn modern techniques of hockey to help the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) revive the game.

He said the PHF was fully committed to put hockey back on the track and it would groom coaches to teach hockey to the present generation on new lines.

He praised the coaching skills of FIH expert Tayyab Ikram and termed him an asset for the game.

Bajwa said the PHF would be organising similar high performance courses on regular basis and outstanding coaches would be sent abroad for further training.

The course is concluding on Wednesday.—APP
