LAHORE, Nov 26: Favourite Royal Passion came with a well-timed challenge under jockey Shahid Rehman to land the feature event during the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday.
Owned by Makhdoom Syed Ali Raza and trained by Mohammad Afzal, bay colt went wide in the straight but came back with magnificent strides to beat front-running bay horse Unter by a length.
Pretty Girl, ridden clumsily by apprentice Bilal Ahmed, was nosed into third place with Miss Brave Heart fourth. A big field of 15 runners faced the starter.
This was the fifth race, a class VI division I and II combined handicap event contested over 1100 metres.
A race later, three-year-old colt Green Desert, was given a patient ride by apprentice M. Zulfiqar to complete a hat trick of victories. The colt had already won two back to back races earlier.
Green Desert beat Mama Mia by 3½ lengths while Bashaeyeash Prince finished third, three lengths further behind.
Leading riding boy Naseer Ahmed gave an outstanding performance in the saddle riding home three winners in a row to the standing applause from his colleagues.
Naseer piloted Independence Day, Kainat and Silent Assassin in the second, third and fourth races, respectively.
Mohammad Afzal and Chaudhry Khurram Hussain distinguished themselves among the trainers, saddling two winners each.
Afzal sent out Royal Passion and Green Desert in the fifth and sixth race while Khurram saddled Independence Day and Silent Assassin in the second and fourth race. Both the winners also earned a double for owner Mian Hamid Mahmood.
The most impressive performer of the day was chestnut filly Kainat, who won the third race easily.
Owned by M.V. Malik and trained Haji Fazal Hadi, the filly justified confidence reposed in her by connections, who backed her at odds of 30 to 100.
After a long time punters returned home with pockets full when all six event were lifted by favourite horses.
The Lahore Race Club (LRC)’s stewards were not satisfied with the running of the gelding Delux owned by trainer Aleemuddin in the fourth race.
They ordered inquiry in to his unsatisfactory performance and till its outcome stopped gelding’s entries in races.
They also banned entries of bay colt Cash Price in races for a month.
In the fifth race LRC stewards suspended the licence of riding boy A. Raza for one month and also fined him Rs10,000 for unsatisfactory riding of filly Mirana Shaheen.
