KARACHI, Oct 21: Police have failed to make any headway in the investigation of a bank heist in which two robbers broke open bank lockers and took away gold and cash worth millions of rupees on Sunday night.The incident occurred at the Habib Bank Faisal Cantonment branch on Sharea Faisal where two robbers wearing banks’ security guards’ uniforms managed to make their way into the bank and took away valuables and cash after spending four hours inside the bank.

Supervisory Police Officer of Sharea Faisal Raza Husain Shah told Dawn that police were considering all possible angles if it was an inside job or not.

So far, it appeared that it could be the work of some employee of the bank who had either left the job or was fired from the bank, as the robbers appeared to be familiar with the bank’s working, the DSP said, pointing out the use of banks security uniform by the robbers.

However, the SPO admitted that so far nothing fruitful had emerged in the investigation.

He said the police had collected fingerprints from the crime scene, as the suspects had left their tools behind, including a sledge hammer and a drill machine.

Proper sketches of the suspected robbers involved in the heist have not yet been prepared, as the bank’s security guard was reported to be unable to recollect.

The other two members of the bank’s vigilance team who were also taken hostage by the robbers had expressed their inability to help in the sketch-making process saying that it was dark in the bank and they were not able to see the robbers’ faces, sources in the police investigation said.

According to the police account 66 lockers were broken open by the robbers while a spokesman for the bank claimed that only 44 lockers were broken open and 10 such lockers were not yet rented out to customers by the bank.
