KARACHI, Aug 24: After a two-day break, the Sindh Assembly will resume its business on Monday at 9.30am.

The order of the day issued for Monday’s session includes the constitution of standing committees and other committees as laid down in the rules.

The ongoing special session was summoned by the Sindh governor on Aug 22.

Although in the order of the day there was only routine business and it did not have any indication of the need for summoning a special session, as expected, a resolution was moved under Rule 211 nominating PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari as the most suitable candidate for the office of president.

This resolution was unanimously adopted by the house as it was backed by all political parties in the house, including the PML-F, PML-Q, NPP, MQM and ANP.

Likewise, in the agenda issued for Monday’s session there is only routine business, but sources said a resolution was likely to be moved from the treasury side under Rule 211 through a motion asking for the suspension of all relevant rules so that the resolution pertaining to effecting necessary reforms in the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2001 could be taken for consideration.

As the local government ordinance had been covered under the sixth schedule of the Constitution, the house would recommend to the federal government that the SLGO be amended to remove anomalies in it as its certain provisions were in conflict with the concept of provincial autonomy given in the 1973 Constitution.

Another issue likely to be taken up for consideration forthwith under Rule 211 pertains to the revival of the magistracy system. This system was scrapped with the introduction of the Police Order 2002.
