KARACHI, Aug 20: A special court here on Wednesday awarded three years imprisonment to a drug peddler for possessing around four kilogrammes of hashish.

The verdict was announced by the judge of the Special Court for Control of Narcotics Substance (CNS), Rubina Khan, who found the accused, Farooq, guilty.

The judge pronounced the verdict after recording final arguments from both sides and imposed a fine of Rs50,000.

In case of non-payment of fine, the convict would have to undergo a six-month additional imprisonment.

The police had arrested Farooq on June 19, 2006, from Site area and had recovered 3,750 grams of hashish from his possession.

A case was registered against Farooq under Section 6/9-C of Control of Narcotics Substance Act.

In the final arguments, Public Prosecutor Mohammad Arif Sitai stated that the prosecution had proved its case and contented that three witnesses in their statements had also confirmed that 3,750 grams of hashish was recovered from the accused. He pleaded that the accused be awarded capital punishment.

The defence counsel, however, told the court that his client was innocent and was implicated.

Meanwhile, an additional district and sessions court on Wednesday awarded seven years imprisonment to an accused in an attempt to murder case. The accused is stated to be associated with a banned outfit.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs35,000 on Mohammad Yousuf. He would have to undergo an additional five-month imprisonment. M Raza was the co-accused in the case.

The prosecution stated that the CID police had arrested the accused in 2003 after a shootout and registered a case FIR (91/03) under Sections 324 and 353/34 of PPC was registered at the CID Sindh. Both the accused were allegedly involved in sectarian attacks.

An additional district sessions court adjourned on Wednesday the hearing of three murder cases registered against an alleged gangster of Lyari, Arshad Papu, and others till Sept 17 since the judge was on leave.

The court had indicted the accused on a pervious hearing on July 16. However, they pleaded not guilty and opted to contest the case.

According to the prosecution, on Mach 26, 2004, Arshad Papu along with his associates allegedly opened fire in a market in the limits of Kalakot police station, which caused serious injuries to Abdul Basit, Shoaib and Zubair. Basit succumbed to his injuries later.

Police registered a case under Sections 302 and 324/34 of Pakistan Penal Code at Kalakot Police Station. In the second case, he was charged with killing a civilian, Inamul Haq, in front of his house in Kalakot on May 28, 2004. The third case pertained to the murder of another man in Chakiwara. The trials are being held inside the Central Prison.
