BERLIN, Aug 2: Germany’s Irina Mikitenko, winner of the London Marathon this year, has pulled out of the Beijing Olympics because of a foot injury, the German athletics federation announced on Saturday.

Mikitenko, 35, had been targeting a podium finish after setting a new personal record of 2hr 24min 14sec on her way to victory in London. She finished fifth at the 2000 Sydney Games and seventh in Athens 2004. Her withdrawal follows that of another medal hope, world champion discus thrower Franka Dietzsch, who is also injured.—AFP
