SIALKOT, July 30: Hundreds of people on Wednesday staged a demonstration in the city’s Pakka Garha locality against the district government’s failure to lay a sewerage system here despite repeated appeals by locals to the authorities over the last several years.

The protesters, who were carrying banners and placards inscribed with their demands, raised slogans against the district government. They said there was no drainage and sewerage system in their locality and the sewerage water was entering their houses.

They said the locality’s only pond was already overflowing and the sewage smell had made people’s lives miserable.

District government officials evaded comment on the issue. However, tehsil municipal administration officials said a survey had been completed for the construction of a drain in the locality.

POLICE FAILURE: Daska police have failed to arrest offenders Muhammad Iqbal and Muhammad Ejaz of Maggo Kumma village, Daska tehsil, who were freed from police custody by their nine accomplices more than two months ago.

Two of the men, who freed Iqbal and Ejaz by attacking a police van near BRB Canal Bridge on May 21 and also killed constable Nasir Ejaz, were killed in separate encounters with the police the same day.

District Police Officer Muhammad Ameen said police teams were conducting raids for the arrest of Iqbal and Ejaz and those who freed them.
