ISLAMABAD, July 12: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani reviewed his government’s performance during its first 100 days on Saturday at a high-level meeting.

The prime minister, who had announced his government’s priorities and actions for the first 100 days after winning a unanimous vote of confidence in the National Assembly on March 31, is expected to address the nation in a few days to take people into confidence on his government’s “failures and achievements”.

The meeting held at the Prime Minister’s House was attended by Finance Minister Syed Naveed Qamar, special assistant to prime minister Shahnaz Wazir Ali, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Salman Farooqi, Stated Bank Governor Dr Shamshad Akhtar and federal secretaries, according to an official handout.

The prime minister, who was earlier expected to address the nation on July 7, had a similar meeting with his economic team on July 5. But due to lack of details about the government’s performance his address was postponed.

He had asked the ministries and divisions concerned to compile a comprehensive report on the 100 days of his government.

The prime minister also presided over a meeting of the Economic Advisory Council on Saturday to discus ways for giving relief to the poor.

The PPP-led government is being criticised for not controlling the rising prices of essential food items and withdrawing subsidies on utilities.

The meeting, according to sources, discussed a number of proposals to contain the unprecedented price hike and provide relief to people.

Water and Power Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, Salman Farooqi, Hina Rabbani Khar, Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Dr Shamshad Akhtar, the finance secretary and officials of the Economic Advisory Council attended the meeting.

NWFP Minister for Food Mohammad Shujaa Khan also met the prime minister and complained about lower supply of wheat to his province.

Mr Gilani assured the minister that the issue would be resolved in the next cabinet meeting on July 16.
